What
All-West Junior Orchestra is comprised of the most talented young musicians in west Tennessee. The All-West event includes a two-day clinic where students will practice with a recognized conductor and a performance at the Cannon Center. Participating students receive invaluable musical instruction as well as enjoy a two-day fieldtrip from school to play music with amazing students from the West Tennessee area. They will accept 36 violins, 12 violas, 12 cellos, and 6 basses but every year 100’s audition.
Who
Only orchestra students may audition. There are no grade restrictions, 6th, 7th, or 8thmay audition. It is an honor to be chosen for the All-west orchestra, thus if chosen the student will be expected to perform with the group. 8th Grade Students: Are expected to learn the audition music. They must either audition for an automatic quiz grade, or perform audition for class to be graded as a quiz with a valid excuse for not attending audition.
Audition Music Requirements
Aspiring performers will need to audition on two pre-selected songs, a series of scales, and a sight reading selection. Interested students and 8thgraders were given the music in September, if they still need music, they will need to request it from me. Points are awarded for tone (15 points), Pitch (8 points), Rhythm (9 points), Technical Accuracy (10 points), and Musicality (18 points). The prepared song is worth 60 out of 115 total points. The minimum score to advance changes every year.
Audition Scale Requirements
Students should have their scales memorized. Only one two-octave scale is required, the others may be one octave. Additional points are awarded for additional octaves that are well done. However, it is better to play one octave in-tune with a great tone, than play a second octave out of tune. Scales are located in their orchestra book, but should be played in strict quarter notes with the quarter note at 100 on a metronome. Scales are worth 15 points out of 115 but judges may also be listening to their tone (15 points) and pitch (8 points) during their scales.
Violins – D Major 2 octaves, C, G, A, F, Bb, and Eb 1 octave
Violas, Cellos and Basses – G Major 2 octaves, C, D, A, F, Bb, and Eb 1 octave
Audition Sight Reading Requirements
Students will be required to perform a short sight reading excerpt. Sight-reading counts heavily toward the final score and should be practiced regularly. They will have amount of time to look through the piece before they perform. Points are awarded for Sight-Reading Rhythm (17 points), Sight-Reading Technical Accuracy (15 points), and Sight-Reading Musicality (8 points), which accounts for 40 points of the total 115.
How much
The orchestra fee covers the audition fee. However, the clinic fee is 40$ plus expenses if they are chosen. The clinic is downtown at the Cook Convention Center. Parents will be responsible for transportation to and from the event as well as money for meals. Some parents chose to get a hotel room with their child to cut down on driving.
